Everyone is talking about self driving cars worldwide. But, a few car makers are succeeded in mastering the self driving technology. Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL), is in the forefront in honing the skills in self driving technology.
The company does not want to establish self driving cars on its own. It is planning to license the technology with prominent automakers and make money by offering a safe ride to the passengers.
Waymo has conducted a number of trials on the city roads in the US using its own fleet of self driving vehicles.
The self driving cars of Waymo have already clocked over 5 million miles on the roads of US cities. To its credit, the company has completed 352,545 autonomous miles on the roads of California in 2017. The self driving cars of Alphabet requires disengagement of just 63 times when compared to the 105 of General Motors Company (NYSE:GM). It means that a human driver needs to control the vehicle every 5,595 miles.
General Motors have clocked just 125,000 miles when compared to 352,545 miles of Alphabet. The human driver has to take control of the GE autonomous vehicle every 1,254 miles. Therefore, it has improved the self confidence of Alphabet to commercialize the self driving technology.
