Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) has unveiled a prototype of the smart window for the car so that blind people can see the passing landscape. The company along with an Italian startup XYZ has used the vibrations in the prototype to provide a sense of the landscape outside to the visually impaired and blind people.
The innovative smart window uses an external camera to take pictures of the passing landscape. The captured images are converted into the high contrast gray scale images. Special LEDs are used to reproduce the images on the glass. When the image is touched by the blind person, vibrations with varying intensities of the image helps to create a picture in their minds. Therefore, the blind persons can imagine the shape of the outside scenery.
The team of Ford based in Italy sought the help of a local startup GTB Roma and Aedo to create the smart window for the blind and visually impaired.
The innovative work is to allow the visually impaired and blind people feel and see the images, sceneries, people and their loved ones. It helps them to move around and hook up with some one and enjoy the life.
Ford has done a great job by providing an inbuilt AI voice assistant into the Smart window and links it with the audio system in the car. It tells how the outside surroundings are to the people inside the car. For example, if the outside scenery boasts snow mountains, the same is conveyed to the people inside the car. However, it is currently in the nascent stage.
Ford is likely to include this innovative technology in the autonomous vehicle in future. The company is currently testing the driver-less vehicles and learning the challenges associated with automated driving technology. The company is trying to address how the AI in the car will interact with the passengers and provide the necessary details say as they travel from point A to point B.
