Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) has entered into a pact with Downer EDI Limited (OTCMKTS:DNERF) for a big IoT Project in Australia. The main aim of this project is to provide digital advantages to the transportation and infrastructure industry in Australia.
Under this new initiative, Downer will provide smart city applications including waste management, traffic light management, intelligent street lighting, and security using Cisco Kinetic, an IoT network platform, in Australian Cities.
Kevin Bloch, Chief Technology Officer of Cisco ANZ, said Downer is mainly focusing on networking. As part of the alliance, both the firms will jointly work to deliver solutions to improve operational efficiency and safety for the customers. They will use Kinetic IoT Data Fabric of Cisco to provide action and insight from data, cyber security, and video analytics.
Improved Safety to The General Public
Both Cisco and Downer intends to provide more safety to the general public using IoT solutions. The innovative solution reduces death caused due to collision and accidents. It also provides other travel alternatives for increased safety.
As part of IoT push, Downer has already implemented stormwater drains, smart street lights, infrastructure and signs on the select Australian Roads. It provides priority to the buses and trams using the connected services. It will also ensure data for managing the roads efficiently.

Manager (Technology and Innovation Group) of Downer, Jeff Sharp said the company will move ahead with implementation of smart city projects and in which Cisco plays a vital role.
He further said, Downer is putting in considerable efforts to grow and maintain its leadership in this segment. It will source the best technology from Cisco to provide the global customers better infrastructure and make the lives of the general public much better.
The Budget for Public Transport Infrastructure is $14.4 Billion
The Australian States are pushing for latest technology roll-outs and has allocated $14.4 billion in the last budget. Cisco is taking advantage of Downer’s machinery to bid for large infrastructure projects. According to Cisco, technology will play a vital role in transforming the cities in the near future.
Cisco and Downer have already worked together in some Western Australian projects last year.
